Safia’s practice moves fluidly across material, spatial, and image-based forms, using light, gesture, and repetition to explore perception, movement, and architecture.
Using industrial and organic materials, she explores tensions between hardness and softness, opacity and translucency, structure and fragility, and between hand-made and fabricated processes.
Photography plays an important role in her process by capturing images of her surroundings, particularly reflective, transitional, and architectural surfaces, which are translated through layering, repetition, and surface manipulation.
More recently, suspended and screen-like forms, alongside sound, have emerged in the work as ways to activate space and shape movement, immersion, and sensory perception.
Informed by Giuliana Bruno’s writings on screen materiality, she approaches installation as a form of drawing and painting in space.
Born in Edinburgh in 1984, Safia lived in Amsterdam from 1999 to 2021, returning to Scotland to pursue a Degree at The Glasgow School of Art. She is graduating in 2026 with a BA (Hons) in Painting & Printmaking.
